Formerly known as CoEvolution Quarterly, then Whole Earth Review, this magazine evolved from supplements to the old Whole Earth Catalogs of the late 1960s. This was the magazine that originally opened my eyes. There I was at age 14, in small-town Whitby (not yet a suburb of Toronto): I found a copy in the high-school library. It quite literally blew the doors off my mind, and the shutters from my eyes. It said: things could be otherwise... WER had consistently been two to four years ahead of the mainstream press in breaking new issues. For instance, I first read of zines, virtual reality, resurgent nationalism, secession movements, alternative economics ('local employment trading systems'), memetics, and the 'Gaia Hypotheses' in its pages. It reviews an almost-unbelievable variety of books, products, music, programs equipment, supplies and videos on just about any subject. It has excellent feature articles. Until recently, it accepted no advertising. And its only stated editorial policy was that its contributors be passionate about their work. The magazine was published regularly, a quarterly. Most good bookshops
and newsstands in the larger cities had it. There is an attempt to revive
it. |
