List of Radio Stations in Toronto

Many radio stations can be heard in Toronto. The greatest number are stations from Toronto itself, but there are others from the surrounding regions. Some US stations are also listenable.

Canadian Stations of the Greater Toronto Area

Although the greater part of Toronto radio stations transmit from the CN Tower, other stations transmit from the surrounding area. Stations use both FM (frequency modulation) or AM ("amplitude modulation) transmission systems; most receivers can receive both AM and FM. Some Canadian stations, both AM and FM, now transmit using the digital transmission system most often called DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting).

Technical Details

In Canada, AM transmissions cam be transmitted on 117 frequencies between 530 KHz and 1700 kHz (10 kHz apart).

FM transmissions cam be transmitted on 80 frequencies between 88,1 MHz and 108,1 MHz (200 kHz apart).

The government plans the transmitting power and the locations of radio stations, so that their transmissions do not interfere with one another. Radio stations are often receivable from great distances, so this task is not easy. Because of this, not every frequency can be used in every location..

Listeners usually find both AM and FM stations by their frequency number.

To each AM or FM station, the government gave identifying "call letters", for example "CFNY", but some stations advertise themselves by a name instead. Analogue stations almost always use their frequency numbers in their advertisements, so that viewers can find their broadcasts. For example, the FM station CFNY uses the frequency of 102,1 MHz and advertises itself as "Edge102".

AM and FM are analogue systems. The government has also planned digital radio broadcasts. They use the worldwide digital audio-broadcasting standard, which is named "Eureka-147", over 23 channels between frequencies of 1452 MHz to 1492 MHz. This digital system is most often known by the initials DAB, for "Digital Audio Broadcasting". Each analogue station is to receive a place in the digital broadcast system, covering a territory roughly equal to that of its analogue broadcast; up to eight stations may be broadcast on one DAB channel. Some stations are broadcasting in DAB now. Therre is a campaign advertising digital radio on analogue stations.

It seems that most people in Toronto don't know about DAB. Until recently, DAB receivers have been very expensive (more than 1000 dollars).

US Stations

US radio stations use the same AM and FM broadcast standards as Canadian stations. Many US stations are receivable in Toronto, and cross-border frequency planning makes sure that they do not interfere with each other. There is not yet land-based digital audio broadcasting in the States (although two satellite-based broadcasters exist).
